Garden Designs – Little Known Design Secrets That Landscaping Companies Don’t Want You To Know

Ask any good gardener and they’ll tell you that the 3 most important elements to great garden designs are color, texture and form.

Of course, while every gardener has his or her own creative and unique tendencies, one thing is for certain: your design *needs* to match up with the rest of your landscaping!

Let’s Talk About “Color” First...

It’s funny to me when I see how much time and energy some gardeners spend agonizing over colors.

(I have a friend who went back and forth so many times last year that by the time they made a decision the planting season was all over! =))

There big thing you’ll want to consider when choosing colors of your garden is the distance between your house and garden.

If your garden is far from the house I wouldn’t recommend using blue and purple flowers.

Why not, you ask?

Because they’re too dark and you won’t be able to see them when you look out a window!

Better colors for a garden that’s further away are yellow, orange and red.

What is Texture?

You know the saying about an artist’s talent coming from his brush? That’s what texture is to a garden – you definitely want your garden to have a unique personality!

You can accomplish a lot by thinking of leaf size, shape and height. This will give your garden a sort of “3 dimensional” look!

Now Let’s Discuss “Form”...

Your garden’s form is decided by how your landscape and hardscape look together. Hardscape just means “non-growing” structures like maybe a stone path, a trellis or wall, etc.

You really want to consider any buildings that surround your garden and how they look against it.

Keep in mind: you don’t want your garden to stand out or “clash” against it’s surroundings… instead it should blend in and complement what’s around it.

The Best Garden Designs Will Express The Gardeners Personality And Desire

For instance, if you love vegetables - plant the ones you enjoy eating! (As obvious as that might sound, I’ve talked with too many people who plant vegetables they hate – just because they feel like it’s “in style”!)

If you love watching butterflies then why not design a butterfly garden in your backyard?!

There are lots of different garden designs including: herb gardens, rose gardens, Zen gardens, rock gardens, butterfly gardens… and that’s just to name a few!

Why not design a garden in your front yard to give your home “curb appeal” and welcome visitors, and then have a vegetable garden in the back yard?

Tip for a beautiful view: line a flowerbed along a fence so you see if from the hopes.

How about a nice place to relax with family and friends? Just place garden furniture, pathways or stepping stones that lead to a birdbath in your garden.

Just To Sum Things Up...

There are *so many* beautiful garden designs that the possibilities are really endless and only limited by your creativity!

When designing a new garden, just make sure you start with the 3 elements you learned from this article and I promise you will have the garden of your dreams!
